Project Depth:
15-18m

Magil Construction Ontario Inc. tasked Menard Canada with the design, supply, and installation of Vertical Wick Drains (VWD) for the Operations Centre and Storage Building as part of the Hydro One Networks Inc. Dunnville Operations Centre project located on the north side of County Road 12 (Ramsey Drive), west of 255 Ramsey Drive in Dunnville, Ontario.

Ground Conditions

The subsurface conditions underlying the topsoil cover generally consisted of a layer of sand, overlying silty clay deposits that extended to the bedrock surface, encountered at depths ranging between 23 to 25 m below ground surface.

Menard Canada Solution

Wick Drain installation was completed below the operations build and storage shed footprint, as well as the adjoining exterior concrete pads plus a 3 m offset. Following the Wick Drain installation, the contractor raised the grade with engineered fill per the project specifications and monitored the settlement. The estimated total settlement due to grade raise was about 50 – 75 mm and was expected to reach 95% consolidation in a period of one and a half (1.5) months based on a coefficient of consolidation value (Cv) of 4 m2/year selected from the one-dimensional consolidation test results.
