Selected Technique:
Controlled Modulus Columns

Project:
313 Columns

For the proposed New St. Patricks Catholic Elementary School, Hamilton, Ontario, ground improvement was deemed necessary to achieve the required bearing capacity and settlement control for the strip/spread footings and grade beam foundations. The foundation system was designed for a maximum bearing capacity of up to 250 kPa SLS (375 kPa ULS). Tambro Construction Ltd. contracted Menard Canada to install Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs) beneath the building footprint of the proposed school structure.

Ground Conditions

The soil conditions at the site generally consisted of a loose silty sand fill followed by loose to dense native silty sand with trace clay and gravel underlain by very stiff clayey silt with trace gravel.

Groundwater levels were identified within 3.8 to 4.4 m below grade, per the geotechnical report provided to Menard Canada.

Menard Canada Solution

Controlled Modulus Columns (CMCs) ground improvement system was proposed for strip/spread footings and grade beam foundations for settlement control and improved bearing capacity of up to 250 kPa.
