The owner, IMTT, intended to extend its storage capacity by building 9 additional NLG tanks having a diameter of 39.6m and a height of 17m. As part of the phase 1 expansion project, soil improvement for tanks 42 and 43 was awarded to Menard Canada
The proposed solution was to implement a dense network of semi-rigid inclusions called Controlled Modulus Columns (CMC) Under the tank footprint. A total of 950 CMCs were installed down to 6 to 8.5m depth over a treated area of 2 250m2. Dynamic load tests were used to confirm that specifications were achieved.
