The position of Senior Project Manager is part of Menard Canada’s operations department. Employees under this department coordinate the management and execution of projects in the field, from the feasibility study to final delivery. They ensure the planning, organization and monitoring of construction sites, ensuring compliance with quality, safety and efficiency standards. The operational teams collaborate closely with customers, suppliers and subcontractors to ensure the success of projects and the satisfaction of partners.

Job description

The Senior Project Manager independently manages complex, high-stakes soil improvement projects from tender analysis to close-out. They bring deep technical expertise, make critical decisions related to costs, schedules, resources, risks, and margins, and positively influence stakeholders. They also act as a mentor to less experienced team members.

Missions and Responsabilities

Project Management and Planning

  • Analyze tender documents and assess the technical, operational, contractual and financial feasibility of complex projects.
  • Prepare estimates, budgets, service offerings, work programs, implementation plans, and schedules.
  • Define the execution strategy taking into account technical constraints, risks, available resources and margin objectives.
  • Autonomously manage complex, high-stakes projects from preparation to final delivery.
  • Anticipate variances in cost, time, quality or scope, establish corrective actions and follow up on them.

Coordination of operations and stakeholders

  • Coordinate the internal personnel, equipment, materials, suppliers, and subcontractors required to execute the work.
  • Lead or participate in coordination and start-up meetings, and clearly communicate execution requirements to site teams.
  • Mobilize internal and external stakeholders around project priorities and maintain constructive collaboration.
  • Manage sensitive situations with customers, partners, suppliers, and subcontractors, and negotiate appropriate solutions within their area of responsibility.

Technical monitoring, quality and performance

  • Adapt technical solutions to the specific constraints of the projects and validate their consistency with contractual requirements.
  • Ensure that the technical, commercial and environmental data required for execution are complete and considered.
  • Ensure that work complies with plans, specifications, procedures, work programs, and quality requirements.
  • Plan and monitor quality control tests, analyze results, and recommend required adjustments.
  • Conduct site visits and inspections and monitor project performance indicators.

Health, Safety, Environment & Compliance

  • Analyze the risks specific to each site and contribute to the preparation of prevention programs in collaboration with the managers concerned.
  • Integrate health, safety and environmental requirements into planning and execution decisions.
  • Ensure compliance with laws, standards, internal procedures and contractual requirements, and respond quickly to critical deviations or risks.
  • Actively promote a culture of prevention and safe work practices among teams and partners.

Financial and contractual management

  • Ensure the control of budgets, costs, commitments, customer invoicing as well as invoices from suppliers and subcontractors.
  • Analyze variances, financial risks, scope changes and their impacts on project margin and performance.
  • Make the necessary corrective decisions within their area of authority and escalate issues that exceed it.
  • Protect the contractual and financial interests of the company through rigorous documentation and proactive follow-ups.

Closing, Continuous Improvement and Mentoring

  • Prepare final reports and coordinate end-of-work procedures with the technical and administrative teams.
  • Document lessons learned and propose improvements to methods, tools, and processes.
  • Share expertise, support less experienced project managers and coordinators and support their development.
  • Contribute to the dissemination of best practices and cross-functional collaboration within operations.

Autonomy and decision-making

  • Autonomously make critical decisions in complex contexts, after assessing risks, financial impacts and possible solutions.
  • Arbitrate priorities related to cost, time, resources, quality and safety to ensure the success of the project.
  • Assume responsibility for the results of the decisions taken and quickly communicate major issues to management.

Qualifications and Requirements

Independence/Supervision

The Senior Project Manager works under the supervision of the Project Implementation Manager and the Director of Operations. They manage projects with a high level of autonomy, solicits arbitration when issues are beyond his field of authority and exercises a functional role of mentoring to less experienced members of the team.

C. Qualifications and Experience

  • Bachelor’s degree in civil engineering, geotechnics, geology, or a related field, or equivalent engineering degree.
  • Registration as a Professional Engineer (P.Eng.) with OIQ, PEO, or another Canadian provincial or territorial engineering association is considered an asset.
  • Minimum of 8 years of relevant experience in geotechnical engineering, ground improvement, construction, civil engineering, or building project management.
  • Demonstrated experience in managing complex projects independently and coordinating multiple stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite.
  • Knowledge of AutoCAD and Civil 3D.
  • Fluency in French and English.
