9,000 m2 of Vibro Replacement stone column densification to a treatment depth of 12 m
Project Overview
Omicron Construction is building a new Molson-Coors Peak Brewery located in Chilliwack, BC.
Ground Conditions
The native soil conditions generally consisted of clayey silt / silt / organic silt extending up to 5m depth, underlain by granular deposits of loose to compact sand / sand & gravel, interbedded with silty sand layers. Groundwater was encountered approx. 2m below grade.
Ground Improvement Solution
Vibro Replacement stone column ground densification was required beneath select brewery facilities in order to prevent excessive seismic settlements due to the potential hazard of soil liquefaction. Menard installed stone columns using wet top feed methods down to a treatment depth of 12m. The stone columns were installed on two different equilateral grid spacings, where a tighter spacing / greater stone column density was required for the more critical / heavily loaded structures. Post-densification CPT and SPT testing were used to confirm the ground densification program achieved the specified performance criteria.
