The Lansdowne Park redevelopment project is a public-private partnership redevelopment of the Lansdowne Park fairgrounds in Ottawa. In 2007, cracks were discovered in the Frank Clair Stadium and a portion of the south side stands were demolished due to safety concerns. In the interest of re-building a new Lansdowne Park the City of Ottawa teamed up with the Ottawa Sports and Entertainment Group and began planning the new grounds. The geotechnical report concluded that the building needed to be supported on deep foundations. As an alternative to end bearing piles, caissons or a raft foundation, Menard Canada proposed a solution utilizing Rapid Impact Compaction (RIC) to densify the upper 4 meters of loose soil. Soil improvement was necessary to compact the fill and silt within and around the building foot print, providing support for the shallow foundations and to minimize the potential for total and differential settlements. The total depth of fill varied across the site from 1 to 5 meters. The objectives of the treatment were to compact the soil in order to obtain a minimum bearing capacity of 150 kPa with a safety factor of 3 at SLS, 225 kPa at ULS. To limit the maximum calculated total and differential settlement to 25 and 15 mm respectively and to provide specific minimum (N1)60cs testing values with regard to an earthquake of magnitude 6.1 with a ground acceleration of 0.42g.
The total area improved using Menard Canada’s Menard CanadaTOR, RIC solution was 33,700 m2. Based on Menard Canada’s design, a 9 ton steel weight was dropped from a height of 0.9 m, up to 40 times per minute, under the slab areas and footing locations. The RIC program was completed on schedule, with all tests achieving the intended results. Menard Canada delivered a value engineering solution of soil improvement providing a cost-effective reliable method of ground improvement appropriate for the project and for the site.
